Master of Science

The accounting profession has seen dramatic changes in its activities over the last generation. Today’s accountant is vastly different than his/her predecessor of years ago. Increasingly, accountants are called upon to engage in tasks that go far beyond the scope of what was traditionally thought of as accounting services. This broadening of scope brought on by shifts in the social, technological, financial, legal, and ethical environments has been reflected in the 150-hour requirement to sit for the Certified Public Accounting exam. The challenge is to develop in today’s professional accountant the breadth of knowledge necessary to cope in today’s complex environment. The master of science in accounting program at Louisiana State University is designed to meet that challenge. With special emphasis on fundamentals and business decision making, the program is uniquely qualified to prepare the student for a lifetime of continual learning and development.

The Master of Science in Economics is a streamlined, applied program designed to provide the training necessary for careers in business and government. Students can complete the program in three regular semesters. The first semester comprises four courses — mathematical economics, macroeconomic theory, microeconomic theory, and applied econometrics — that provide a foundation in economic theory and quantitative methods which is utilized in the remaining six elective courses that must be taken.  With permission of the graduate director, students may elect to take up to two of their six elective courses in disciplines outside of economics. Prior to entering the program, students should have completed undergraduate courses in calculus, statistics, and intermediate macroeconomics and microeconomics. Program details can be found on the economics link above.

The master of science program in finance provides its students with the analytical and communicative skills necessary for effective financial decision making through the application of financial theory and quantitative techniques. The Louisiana State University master of science finance program offers a challenging advanced degree that prepares its participants to become the leaders of this rewarding and dynamic field.
