LSU LBTC Joins Partners to Make Technology Conference Successful

BATON ROUGEThe LSU Louisiana Business & Technology Center has partnered with economic development organizations throughout the state to make the upcoming Offshore Technology Conference Brasil trade mission a success.  Representatives from 23 Louisiana companies are scheduled to travel to Brazil on September 28, 2011, along with various representatives from governmental and non-profit agencies to facilitate matchmaking opportunities between Louisiana and Brazilian companies. The conference will be held October 4-6, 2011 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

“This is a great opportunity for LSU and the Louisiana Business & Technology Center to partner with the Committee of 100, the Office of Community Development Disaster Recovery Unit, the Economic Development Administration, Louisiana Economic Development and the U.S. Export Assistance Center on an international initiative,” said LBTC Executive Director Charles D’Agostino. “The university has been developing a strong relationship in Brazil and Latin America with universities and business incubators to create many opportunities and establish contacts for the Louisiana businesses participating in these trade initiatives.”

Michael Olivier, chief executive officer of the Committee of 100, stated that Louisiana companies qualifying for this opportunity represent an array of service firms in the oil and gas sector keen on new market opportunities in Brazil and South America.
“We are hopeful that the grant funding from the EDA and Governor’s Office of Community Development will be useful to our Louisiana firms seeking new export markets at the 2011 Brasil OTC.”

During the week prior to OTC Brasil, Louisiana exporters will be participating in two days of business meetings and site visits with Brazilian companies in the oil and gas sector. Throughout the conference Louisiana exporters will exhibit at a private kiosk in the Louisiana booth within the U.S. Pavilion. Six companies unable to attend the trade show are participating in the catalog exhibit where their company’s literature will be on display. Companies have the opportunity to participate in an oil and gas roundtable with qualified agents and distributors, hear business briefings on doing business in Brazil, network, learn about market research and listen to country briefings before their departure from the show.

Larry Collins, Louisiana Economic Development’s International Services Director believes exporting companies play an important role in the Louisiana economy.
“These companies tend to pay higher salaries and they are insulated from downturns in the domestic market,” Collins said. “Introducing Louisiana companies to international markets improves and diversifies our economy.”

Certified by the U.S. Department of Commerce and sponsored by Louisiana State University’s Louisiana Business & Technology Center, the Committee of 100 for Economic Development, Louisiana Economic Development, GNO Inc., the World Trade Center, SW Louisiana Economic Development Alliance, The Louisiana Office of Community Development Disaster Recovery Unit, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the U.S. Economic Development Administration have made this initiative possible with their funding and direction.
